All You Need Is Lennon
I was honored to MC the 29th annual John Lennon tribute at Symphony Space last night. It took me two hours to get there, but oh, was it worth it!
Some of the highlights: Dan Bern’s “Mind Games,” Lucy Kaplansky’s “Beautiful Boy,” The Kennedys’ “Norwegian Wood,” Sonya Kitchell’s “This Boy,” Nicole Atkins’ “Woman is Nigger of the World,” Angel Band’s “If I Fell,” David Bromberg’s “You Can’t Do That” (the big guy is still a guitar hero), Joan Osborne’s “Walrus” (which she totally nailed!), Bettye LaVette’s riveting “Working Class Hero,” then Joan & Bettye together on “Imagine” (get those two in the studio together ASAP!). Not to mention a chance to see Chris Bliss, the guy who’s gotten 50 million YouTube views of his video juggling 3 balls to “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End.”
Here’s a great shot by Lou Manna of the finale, with (left to right) David Bromberg, Bettye LaVette, Tony Shanahan (of the killer house band put together by Rich Pagano of the Fab Faux), Joan Osborne, Dan Bern, Maura Kennedy:
Just give me more of that rock & roll music!
