Pete Fornatale's long-running weekly program Mixed Bag, which airs Saturday nights on WFUV, reveals shades of his first radio show, Campus Caravan. Fornatale debuted Campus Caravan on WFUV in November 1964, spinning records by lesser-known artists, playing deeper album cuts than the current hit singles, and conducting soul-searching interviews with artists such as The Beach Boys, The Mamas and The Papas, and Simon & Garfunkel, all of whom came through Fordham on tour.
He continued in that vein after moving on to WNEW in 1970, where he developed Mixed Bag in 1982. As its name implies, Mixed Bag defies definition. It's an eclectic collection of music which - despite its diversity - centers around a weekly theme carefully chosen by Fornatale. Throughout the years, the program has helped launch the careers of singer-songwriters such as Suzanne Vega and Christine Lavin and has featured Fornatale's trademark in-depth interviews with icons such as Paul Simon, Pete Seeger and Joni Mitchell.
In February, 2001, Fornatale returned to WFUV, Mixed Bag in hand. "I've always been proud to be part of the station's past," he said at the time. "I'm equally proud to be part of its future."
Since his return, Pete has brought another treasure to the WFUV airwaves: Mixed Bag Radio, a focused, hour-long interview and live performance segment with a different artist each week. Past guests have included Emmylou Harris, Bruce Hornsby, Dar Williams, Brian Wilson, Lou Reed, Graham Parker, and show favorites Poco and Loggins and Messina.
Pete Fornatale can be heard on Mixed Bag Saturdays from 4-8pm, and his one-hour interview show, Mixed Bag Radio, can be heard Sunday mornings from 7-8am.
