Co-hosts Claudia Marshall and Julianne Welby bring listeners a unique blend of musical, cultural and information programming Monday through Friday mornings on WFUV. The team broke new ground in the morning-show market when the show began in 2001 - and not just because they became the only all-female morning team in New York City. "I like to think you get everything you need in the morning from us: weather, traffic, news headlines and great music, all in a no-spill package," says Marshall.
"We're trying to appeal to all sorts of adults," explains Welby, who also serves as WFUV's News & Public Affairs Director. "We're trying to tap into what their other interests are outside of music, whether it's cultural or issue-oriented: what kind of news they like, what kind of play they might see, what type of book they would pick up at the bookstore." Welby's most memorable interviews have included national poet laureate Billy Collins and Perfect Storm author Sebastian Junger, and she has a rosy outlook for future coverage as well.
For the most part, Marshall serves as music host while Welby focuses on the information side, anchoring newscasts twice an hour, and interviewing both newsmakers and regular guests.
Weekly show highlights include regular visits from experts in the fields of science, music, theater and film, and benefits from a team of dedicated Fordham students who help pull together the many details reported each morning. They also hone their own reporting and audio skills by creating original features heard every week on the show.
"Every semester we get stronger and stronger students who are doing great work," says Welby proudly, "and seeing a show like this get better is really gratifying."
