Patriot League Preview: Lafayette Leopards

by DJ Sixsmith

Fordham Athletics

This is the third of seven articles that preview the 2013 Patriot League teams.  They are in the inverse order of the preseason poll voting by Patriot League football head coaches and sports information directors, who did not include their own school in the selections.

Fordham was not included in the poll because it will not be able to compete for the Patriot League championship and NCAA automatic bid in 2013, and its games against League members will not count towards the final standings for either team.

NCAA Paying Players is a Slippery Slope

The debate about college athletes being paid is raging again. My twitter feed has been bombarded by Jay Bilas arguing that the only people not being cut in on the profits of the NCAA are the athletes earning the money. Most notably, Bilas exposed a flaw in the NCAA’s online store, which paired athletes’ names to their school’s jersey with their number, an example of using a student’s image for profit that was long argued to occur in NCAA football games.  I agree with Bilas, but I’m going to take a different angle to the same problem.

Fordham Athletic Director Dave Roach came on One on One Saturday to discuss all things Fordham sports. I spoke to him about his first summer as AD at Rose Hill and about some of the interesting things he's been doing. Roach addressed some of the exciting new additions to the athletic facilities at Fordham, which include new grass on Bahoshy and Murphy Fields along with brand new video scoreboards being put up in the Rose Hill Gym.

Fordham Head Coach Tom Pecora Reacts to Signing of Jon Severe

by DJ Sixsmith

Michael Watts :: WFUV Sports

The Fordham Rams Men’s Basketball program has won just eight games in the Atlantic 10 over the past five seasons. Those struggles could finally be coming to an end as Christ the King High School sensation Jon Severe will be wearing a Fordham jersey next season. The 6’2 guard from Brooklyn is head coach Tom Pecora’s biggest recruiting splash since taking the job three years ago.

Flash back to last April.

It’s late in recruiting season, but the Rams manage to get a 6’ 1” Point Guard out of Blair Academy by the name of Jermaine Myers. He’ll add depth to the backcourt and compete with Fatty McMillan for minutes. The team enters the offseason on a higher note than years past; while Kervin Bristol is gone, Chris Gaston will surely have a monster senior campaign.
