Postgame Report: Army 55 Fordham 0
Army's triple-option attack runs all over the Fordham D in the snow.
By Alex Smith
Coming into Saturday’s match up with the Army Black Knights, Fordham fans had a lot to look forward to. The Rams had a chance to show that they could compete with an FBS (formerly Division 1) team. Fordham fans were excited to make the trip to Michie Stadium in West Point, New York.
Then the snowstorm hit.
A rare late October snowstorm came and rattled the Northeast with West Point expecting 10 inches of snow. The storm deterred many fans from traveling to the game, and even forced the two Fordham student buses to make a U-turn back to Rose Hill. As it turned out, these Fordham fans were probably happy to have not seen the game in person, as the Black Knights went on to massacre the Rams, 55-0.
The Rams rushing defense has been a weakness all season, partially due to a plethora of injuries on the defensive front. On the other side, the Black Knights lead all of FBS football with an average of over 350 rushing yards per game. The Army offense is known for its prolific triple-option attack, and on Saturday, the Ram defense had no answers for the Black Knight barrage.
Army’s first three drives ended in three rushing TDs, one from running back Larry Dixon (30yards) and two from quarterback Max Jenkins (1yard, 7 yards). By the end of the first quarter, the Black Knights led 21-0, and had gained 172 yards on the ground.
The second quarter was more off the same, although it did include Army’s only completed pass of the game, a 30 yard strike from Jenkins to Anthony Stevens to part Army on top 28-0, just a few minutes into the 2nd quarter.
The rest of the game saw Fordham’s offense struggle to do anything, and Army’s running attack eat up an incredible number of yards. Rams QB Ryan Higgins completed just one pass for 5 yards, and the Rams as a whole only gained 86 yards of offense the entire game. Meanwhile, Army was off to the races. The Black Knights had 544 yards of total offense, with a whopping 514 yards on the ground.
This loss, the Rams 6th in a row, drops them to 1-7 on the year. The Rams will be in Washington, DC next week to take on the Georgetown Hoyas. The Army Black Knights improve to 3-5, as they get set to play Air Force next weekend.
