Chris Gaston becomes 34th Fordham Player to Score 1,000 Points
It was not the most attractive 40 minutes of play but the Fordham Men’s Basketball team pieced together a 79-69 win over Colgate in front of 1,342 spectators at the Rose Hill Gym. In a game that saw 6 players foul-out, 30 total turnovers, 53 fouls committed, and lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes, the Rams overcame an early eight-point deficit and evened their record at 2-2.
For the second game in a row Fordham had trouble out of the gate; it took the Rams nearly three minutes to score their first bucket on Tuesday – Fordham needed almost three and a half minutes to dent the scoreboard Saturday afternoon. Behind seven first half points from freshman Bryan Smith, Fordham narrowed the deficit to just a single point at the half. However, the end of the first half also brought bad news for Fordham as senior center Kervin Bristol picked up two quick fouls in the waning minutes.
After netting his 1,000th career point early in the first half, Chris Gaston recorded the first two points coming out of the locker room and provided the Rams with their first lead of the game, 34-33. The game remained back-and-forth until Colgate put together an 8-1 run capped off by a Nick Pascale basket with 13:44 left the game. Moments later Fordham lost their center when Kervin Bristol committed his fifth foul of the game. Shortly after, Marvin Dominique followed him to the bench as he was also disqualified with five personal fouls.
With two of their premier interior players out of the game, Fordham was forced to play the last 10:37 of the second half with a guard-laden lineup. Freshman Guard Devon McMillan shone down the stretch as he scored 14 of his 20 points in the last 13:32 of Tuesday’s game.
Fordham had trouble closing out Colgate as the Rams struggled from the free throw line down the stretch put they were finally able to outlast the Raiders and move to 2-0 on the season at the Rose Hill Gym.
