Big Second Half Propels Fordham to Victory
The Fordham Rams closed out the 2012 calendar year the right away, defeating the Monmouth Hawks 82-71 at the Rose Hill Gym on New Year’s Eve. With the win, the Rams have now won three out of their last five games. That may not sound like much, but the team has shown much improvement since their 1-8 start.
Fordham committed 14 turnovers in a very sloppy first half. Those turnovers, combined with the fact that Chris Gaston and Branden Frazier, the team’s two top scorers, combined for just 8 first half points, had the Rams down 33-28 at intermission.
The Rams came out and played with passion after the break, starting the second half with an 18-5 run, which put the Rams up 46-40. The Hawks kept it close for the next few minutes, but Fordham would not give up their lead. Gaston was remarkable in the second half, finishing the game with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Bryan Smith also had a huge second half, connecting on four three-pointers. Smith finished with 18 points and 5 assists. Also of note for Fordham, Ryan Canty had 7 points and 14 rebounds off the bench, while playing just 20 minutes because of lingering back problems.
The Rams are now 4-10 on the season, and they will travel to play Ole Miss on January 4th at 9 PM. All the action can be heard on 90.7 FM and wfuvsports.org.
