Rams Take Season Finale 76-72 over Saint Bonaventure
Heading into their regular season finale at St. Bonaventure, the Fordham Rams didn’t appear to have much to play for. They had no chance of making the A10 tournament, and they hadn’t won a road conference game in four calendar years. On the other side, the Bonnies had everything to play for. A win for the Bonnies put them into postseason play. It was also Senior Day at the Reilly Center. Despite the odds, the young Fordham team played hard for 40 minutes, and their senior leader Chris Gaston stepped up when it mattered most, leading the Rams to an improbable 76-72 win to finish out the year.
In the first half, the teams traded blows. The Bonnies went on the biggest run of the first half with about 10 minutes left in the half, ballooning their lead to 11 points point with six and a half minutes to go before the break. But the Rams fought back, and at the half, the Bonnies were up by six, 41-35.
In the second half, the action picked up for both teams. Fordham scored the first 7 points after intermission, to take the lead 42-41. From that point on, the teams would ride the see-saw for most of the half. Gaston led the charge for the Rams in his final game. Chris would go on to score 22 points and pull in nine rebounds in his best game of his senior campaign. Gaston hit a layup that made the score 71-65 Fordham with 2:50 to play. The Bonnies answered back and made it a one-point game with under a minute to go. Following a timeout, Fordham freshman Mandell Thomas (22 points) hit the biggest shot of his career, sinking a 3 pointer that put the Rams up four with 25 seconds to play. Junior Branden Frazier hit a pair of clutch free throws, and Fordham held on to 76-72 victory.
For the Bonnies, Demetrius Conger, Eric Mosely and Youssou Ndoye all finished with 17 points. However, the Bonnies couldn’t hit a big shot late, as Conger tried a last second desperation three-pointer that missed the mark. It was an extremely costly loss for St. Bonaventure. Later in the day, Charlotte would beat Saint Joseph’s, which eliminated St. Bonaventure (last year’s A10 champs) from this year’s A10 tournament.
Chris Gaston finishes his Fordham career 8th all time in points (1672) and third all time in rebounds (1038).
