Fordham/WFUV Alums Vin Scully and Malcolm Moran front and center at 100th Rose Bowl
The Fordham football team had to decline their invitation to the 1942 Rose Bowl because they previously had accepted an invite to the Sugar Bowl. 74 years later Fordham arrived in Pasadena in the person of two noted alums.
Vin Scully, who will begin his 65th year as voice of the Dodgers this April, was Grand Marshall of the Rose Parade and also tossed the coin before the game between Michigan State and Stanford.
Malcolm Moran, who started One on One 40 years ago and is currently director of the National Sports Journalism Center at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, wrote a coffee table book about Rose Bowl history. The book, Rose Bowl: History of the Granddaddy of Them All, celebrates the100 year history of the longest running bowl game through vintage photographs.
The book also takes readers on a trip back in time with replicas of memorabilia such as an 1890 schedule of events, a 1927 game program, a 1941 ticket, a 1959 press pass, a 1987 sticker and other collectibles that are tucked into pockets within the volume. Readers can also use smartphones to scan QR codes to watch a film clip from the 1898 Rose Parade and footage from two dozen other games.
Malcolm joined One on One this Saturday to discuss the bowl season, the National Championship game and the book. Click here to go to the article and listen to the interview.
