Words with the Writers of Lombardi

by Chris Quagliata
A A

A conversation with Eric Simonson, the playwright of Lombardi and David Maraniss, the author of When the Pride Still Mattered, the biography on which the play is based.

I had the chance to sit down with the author of When Pride Still Mattered, a biography of legendary NFL coach and former Fordham football player and assistant coach Vince Lombardi. I also had a conversation with the playwright for the Broadway play Lombardi, which premieres tomorrow, October 21st in the Circle in the Square Theatre.

The play has been in previews since September 23rd.

David Maraniss (author)

Maraniss' book serves as the foundation for the upcomping play Lombardi, which premieres tomorrow, October 21st. David and I talked about his inspiration for writing the biography, what it was like to talk with former players, Vince Lombardi's Fordham background, how Lombardi's career had an effect on his personal life, and how well Dan Lauria and Judith Light play Vince and Marie Lombardi. (listen below)

Eric Simonson (playwright)

Eric and I discussed the cast and director of the play, how Vince Lombardi's career took a toll on his family, how this play appeals to the non-football fan, and how the Circle in the Square Theatre adds to the experience while watching the play. (listen below)
