The 2013 WFUV Gala at Edison Ballroom on Thursday night was one for the ages. Bob Costas received our prestigious Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports Broadcasting, and it was an honor he truly deserves.
Costas has done it all in this business. You name it, and he's done it. From the Olympics, to the NFL, to a late night
talk show, Bob Costas has truly put his stamp on the sports broadcasting business and Thursday night was a culmination of that success.
As Costas said at the podium, receiving an award named after the great Vin Scully, for many, is the pinnacle of one's career. Costas told a few great stories in his acceptance speech, which can be heard below.
As per usual, Vin could not make it out to New York as he doesn't travel much anymore. However, the audience caught a glimpse of the all-time great broadcaster in video form from the booth at Dodger Stadium where he still does most of the games to this day.
Mike Weisman, who served as executive producer of NBC Sports and worked with Bob for many years, was present at the Gala and used his bubbly personality and humor to engage the audience before introducing Costas.
Interviews with Mike Weisman and Bob Costas prior to the award ceremony can be heard below.
Bob Costas will be on One on One this Saturday after the premiere of Alex Smith's feature about the NBC commentator, "Bob Costas: The Last Word". That feature can be found tomorrow afternoon on WFUVSports.org.
