Owner of the Last Triple Crown Winner Joins WFUV
Patrice Wolfson, the owner of Affirmed (the last horse to win the triple crown), took some time out of her day at Belmont Park to join us on One on One this past Saturday. Mrs. Wolfson is a lovely lady, full of memories about the horse who took the racing world by storm 34 years ago.
She had a lot of very insightful things to tell us, and you could hear the emotion and personality in her voice. The connection she had with Affirmed stretched beyond the Triple Crown and the rivalry with Alydar.
Patrice compared her horse to a little puppy dog, one that liked when she stroked its mane, and would plant its head in her hands. This was a horse that developed a love for its owners, trainer, and jockey. A love that certainly could have impacted the way he ran.
Prior to I’ll Have Another dropping out of Belmont and securing Affirmed’s place in history for at least one more year, Mrs. Wolfson published a website. The site is devoted to her horse and its history, complete with pictures of prized memorabilia Wolfson kept over the years.
affirmedtriplecrown.com is a great source for any one who may not know about the horse and its rivalry with Alydar that came to fruition in the chase for the 1978 triple crown.
Mike Valdetara and I spoke to Patrice about Affirmed, I’ll Have Another, and more.
