Hall of Fame Awards Presentation

by Alex Smith

McCarver and Elliott Honored in Cooperstown

On Saturday, July 21st, as part of Hall of Fame Weekend in Cooperstown, NY, Tim McCarver and Bob Elliott were honored during the Hall of Fame Awards Presentation. McCarver was the recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award for major contributions to the game of baseball by a broadcaster. Elliott was the winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award, the highest honor given out by the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA).
Tim McCarver played Major League Baseball from 1959 to 1980, spending time with the Cardinals, Phillies, Expos and Red Sox. He was the personal catcher for two of the greatest arms that the game has ever seen: Cardinals great Bob Gibson and Phillies star Steve Carlton.
After his 21 year playing career, McCarver went straight to the broadcast booth, and he’s never looked back. McCarver has called games locally for the Phillies, Mets and Yankees. He has also been a fixture in the national spotlight, calling games heard throughout the country for all the major networks. McCarver has been with Fox Sports since 1996, and has called more World Series games than any other broadcaster.
Bob Elliott’s career as a baseball writer can be traced all the way back to Opening Day of the 1978 season with the Montreal Expos. Elliott covered the Expos for the Ottawa Citizen until 1987, when he moved to Toronto and switched from the National to the American League, becoming the Toronto Blue Jays beat reporter for the Toronto Sun.
Elliott’s writing career is not limited to the realm of beat reporting. He has also written three books including Hard Ball, The Ultimate Blue Jays Trivia Book and The Northern Game: Baseball The Canadian Way. He also has his own blog and has served as a columnist for the Toronto Sun since 2011.
Elliott is the first Canadian to win the Spink Award.
