Pletcher Aims for New York Win
There’s one thing for sure heading into this Belmont Stakes - trainer Todd Pletcher is aiming to bring home his 3rd victory in a Triple Crown race. The Texas native is sending 5 horses to compete in the grueling 1 ½ mile race this Saturday.
Pletcher has had a renowned career that began back in his college years when he worked as a groom in the stables of D. Wayne Lukas (the trainer of Preakness winner Oxbow.) He worked his way up to become Lukas’ assistant trainer before getting his own trainer’s license. Since then many of Pletcher’s horses have won numerous racing titles, including the Kentucky Oaks, the Breeders’ Cup, the Travers Stakes, the Belmont Stakes in 2007 and the Kentucky Derby in 2010.
At this year’s Belmont, Pletcher has over one-third of the field covered with Revolutionary, Palace Malice, Overanalyze, Midnight Taboo and the lone filly, Unlimited Budget. The last three are all owned by New York native, Mike Repole, who’s looking to bring home his first Belmont victory.
I had the chance to speak with Todd Pletcher after the postposition draw earlier this week.
