NHL Unveils the Stadium Series in the Bronx

Not to be confused with the already 5-year old Winter Classic, the NHL has decided to establish a new outdoor spectacle, this time on the field of Yankee Stadium. In the Big Apple, the NHL Stadium Series will feature the three local teams in two regular season games. The first comes on Sunday, January 26, 2014 with the Devils playing the Rangers. The Islanders will face the Rangers in the second game on Wednesday, Janurary 29, 2014. The Blueshirts will be the away team in both games.

On hand for the event, which was MC’d by NBC’s Bruce Beck, were the following:

For the NHL: Gary Bettman/NHL Commissioner and Don Fehr/NHLPA executive.

For the Yankees: Randy Levine/ New York Yankees President; Lonn Trost/ New York Yankees COO.

For the Rangers: Jeff Gorton/New York Rangers Assistant General Manager and players Ryan Callahan and Dan Girardi

For the Devils: Lou Lamoriello/New Jersey Devil President, CEO, General Manager and players Bryce Salvador and Andy Greene

And for the Islanders: Garth Snow/New York Islanders General Manager and players John Tavares and Matt Moulson

All of the Winter Classic Games have been sellouts. With this in mind, it seems the heated rivalries between the Rangers, Devils, and Islanders combined with the nostalgia of Yankee Stadium, should produce a potent mix to enthrall the local fan base. The NHL Stadium Series will also visit Los Angeles and Chicago. Comments from most of the participants are available below.
