New York Giants First Round Review

Big Blue hopes Beckham will add depth to the wide receiver position.

The Giants added another receiver to help Eli Manning and company bounce back from a disappointing season.  With the twelfth pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, New York selected Odell Beckham Jr. from LSU.

The first team all-SEC wide out caught 59 passes last year for 1,152 yards and 8 TD’s as a member of the Tigers. Beckham won the Paul Hornung Award last season, presented to college football’s most versatile player. Beckham adds to a receiving core consisting of Victor Cruz, Reuben Randle, Mario Manningham and Jerrel Jernigan.

“He was a top 10 guy on our board”, said general manager Jerry Reese when describing Beckham. “This guy’s a weapon, we try to get the quarterback some weapons and we think this guy is a weapon”, Reese added. Head Coach Tom Coughlin also seemed to be excited about the pick saying, “I think he’ll be on the same page with the quarterback right away, he’s intelligent.” That certainly sounds like something Eli Manning would love to hear.  Last year, it appeared he was not on the same page and out of sync with his receivers, leading to interceptions. Beckham will provide speed on the outside that the Giants have lacked in years past.

Odell also sounded excited to be a Giant stating, “It couldn’t have worked out any better, perfect situation.” With new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo implementing a new offense this summer, the Giants appear to be headed in a more speed obsessed direction that we haven’t seen before. Beckham ran a 4.43 in his forty yard dash at the NFL Combine as well as posting a 38.5 inch vertical.  Beckham certainly has the potential to be a great first round pick for Big Blue. New York is certainly hoping that he can live up to his potential and become a reliable option for Eli Manning this season.
