Jockey Victor Espinoza Reacts to Belmont Loss

by Sean Hahner

California Chrome’s Rider Still Without a Triple Crown

After riveting wins in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, Jockey Victor Espinoza and his horse, California Chrome, saw their dreams come to an end at the Belmont Stakes.  After being injured at the start of the race, California Chrome never recovered and finished tied for fourth with Wicked Strong.

Losing a Triple Crown bid in the final leg of the three races is not unfamiliar to Espinoza, who attempted to capture the Sport of Kings’ greatest accomplishment in 2002 aboard War Emblem.  Like California Chrome, War Emblem struggled early on in the race as he stumbled out of the gate.
