While most of the country’s eyes were glued to opening day of football, it was just as monumental a day for tennis. Due to severe weather conditions Saturday evening, the last men’s semi-final and women’s final were played Sunday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Before the women’s match, Andre Agassi was inducted into the US Open Court of Champions. In Flushing, football became an afterthought.
The final four in the women's draw were narrowed down to two earlier today. #1 seed from Belarus Victoria Azarenka and #4 seed American Serena Williams will face in the finals scheduled for tomorrow night.
The crowds at day ten of the U.S. Open saw Andy Roddick play his final match, a loss to 7th ranked Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, (6-7, 7-6, 6-2, 6-4). Roddick only had 3 break opportunities after the first set and could not convert any of them. Despite being broken twice in the third set, Roddick continued to play hard. He served in 130MPH range at many points through out the match, and saved a match point on his serve.
On a warm, breezy, and most importantly, sunny day in Flushing Meadows, Amit Badlani, Jake Kring-Schreifels, and I hosted One on One live from the US Open. On a day filled with American tennis, we had much to discuss regarding the direction of the sport in our country. Just hours after Andy Roddick had shaken Arthur Ashe Stadium, we sat outside the venue with special guests discussing his impact on tennis and what chances he has to excite the fans a little while longer.
Andy Roddick turned 30 yesterday, the same day he decided to hold a surprise press conference to announce that this U.S. Open will be his last professional tennis tournament. While more players are having success later in their careers, 30 is a milestone year for a tennis player. Tennis is a sport which has a brutal schedule, a very short offseason, and demands intense physical conditioning. Roddick said, “I think that wear and tear in miles is something that’s not really an age thing.
Caroline Wozniacki didn't expect to leave New York in less than a week, much less without a win.
The eight seed on the Women's side was upset 6-2, 6-2 by Irina-Camelia Begu, who's ranked 96th in the world.
"You know, you always want to go in and do your best no matter what's happening out there. I tried. I didn't succeed to play well."
