3-10 and 12-9. Those are the two New York Liberty records before and after thirteen regular season games. The Liberty have been gradually improving all year, so it must not come as much of a surprise that they defeated the Indiana Fever Sunday night 73-61 in their season finale after losing 76-63 to the same team three nights prior.

After a successful 2-1 road trip in which the Liberty won two games by a combined six points, New York found a way to win another close one, defeating the Washington Mystics 80-76 on Tuesday night at the Garden. The Liberty now sit at 11-14, which may not seem like a record to be excited about, but after a 4-11 start to the season, New York is getting hot at the right time.

School is now in session. Well, no it isn’t, but at least for Cappie Pondexter it is. On a day where Madison Square Garden hosted about 12,000 out of school summer campers for Camp Day, Pondexter was still teaching an important lesson; do not leave her wide open on the game-winning shot.

So much for home-cooking. After winning three straight games at home, the Liberty believed they had turned a corner, but lost to the San Antonio Stars on the road. Heading back home, the Libs (7-13) thought they had a good shot at winning their fourth game out of five Friday night, but lost to the Los Angeles Sparks (8-11) 68-54.

The Liberty came into this five game home stand with a 3-10 record, losers of 5 straight and were searching for answers. Laimbeer said “I told the team six, seven games ago that I only know of one way out of this- to come to work every day and play as hard as you can.” After Tuesday night’s 90-74 win against the Tulsa Shock, the Libs are 6-11.  While it is still not the prettiest record, there are definitely signs that the Liberty are poised for a run in the second half of the season.

Maddie the mascot’s birthday was not the only reason to celebrate this Sunday for the New York Liberty (5-10). The team, who had just lost a close game on Friday against Chicago 73-69, bounced back and beat the Connecticut Sun 67-65 in another tight one.
