by Kelly Kultys

Kelly Kultys/WFUV Sports

Sometimes, when it seems the darkest, all you need is a little light – or a little music – to fix it. That’s the goal of an organization, titled Musicians on Call. Founded in 1999 by Michael Solomon and Vivek Tiwany, Musicians on Call performs for sick patients in hospitals in an attempt to brighten their day.

by Jake Kring-Schreifels

Francois Battiste and Bill Dawes :: Bob Ahrens

Bronx Bombers is the latest sports drama from producers Fran Kirmser and Tony Ponturo, the team responsible for 2012’s Magic/Bird and 2011’s Lombardi.

I got a chance to interview the producers, director, and entire cast in December at Bronx Bombers media day.

This is the first of four articles highlighting different interviews from that day in preparation for the play’s opening night.

The Mets swept the Yankees for the first time that the sixteen year-series has been played, and it was only the fourth time they won the season series. Contained within those four games was the first blown save in 2013 for the great Mariano Rivera (the first time he failed to record an out in his storied career), a 9-4 blowout much needed by a struggling offense, and four starters who pitched into the sixth inning or deeper.

Ralph Branca, the former Dodger, Tiger, and Yankee, known predominantly as being the pitcher who gave up "The Shot Heard Round the World" to Bobby Thompson, joined Mike Watts and I Saturday to discuss his former teammate Jackie Robinson. With "Jackie Robinson Day" taking place April 15th and a new film about the legend "42" out Friday (Ralph is portrayed in the film), we took the time to discuss Robinson's historical impact on the game of baseball and Branca's firsthand experience as his teammate.

New York City Back in a Basketball State of Mind

by Steve Simineri

For what seems like forever now, New York City has been called a basketball town. But, that really hasn’t been the feeling around these parts for quite some time now. The Yankees own the hearts of most of the city, with seventeen postseason appearances during the last 18 seasons and 5 Championships.

Swept Away

For the fourth straight ALCS playoff game, the New York Yankees’ bats fell dormant, falling to Detroit 8-1.  For the second time in six years, the Tigers are going to World Series.

In fact, the last time the Tigers made it there, they knocked off both the Yankees and the Oakland Athletics. They just might face the St. Louis Cardinals again too. For the Yankees, the game was a fitting end to their offensive nightmare of a postseason, and now an unpredictable offseason looms.
