On our final Monday Night Quarterback podcast of the 2011 season, Kyle Kesses and I look back on the Rams' 1-10 campaign, focusing specifically on Saturday's 41-21 loss at the hands of Holy Cross, and the firing of head coach Tom Masella.
It was a tale of two halves at the latest installment of the Ram-Crusader Cup at Jack Coffey Field.
In the first half, after allowing an opening-drive touchdown to Holy Cross, the Rams buckled down on defense, forcing three three-and-outs and allowing only seven more points, on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Taggart to Jon Smith early in the second quarter.
On the offensive side of the ball, Ryan Higgins found Greg Wilson for two long touchdowns of 44 and 40 yards, and Carlton Koonce scored on a six-yard touchdown run as the Rams as Fordham took a 21-14 lead into the locker room.
Turnovers and special teams errors are the kind of mistakes that keep football coaches up at night. We don’t know Rams Head Coach Tom Masella’s sleep patterns, but his frustration with such errors during Saturday’s 21-0 loss at the hands of the Bucknell Bison was clear when he sat down with Kyle Kesses and I for the penultimate installment of Monday Night Quarterback.
This week, the opponent and venue were different --- the Rams hosted the Bucknell Bison --- but committed four more turnovers and could not dent the scoreboard as the Bison pitched a shutout, blanking Fordham 21-0 at Jack Coffey Field.
It's simple, everything has gone wrong for the Fordham University Football team in 2011. Saturday was no different. The Rams turned the ball over four times – one that directly lead to a touchdown – and the special teams allowed a 73-yard kickoff return on the way to dropping their seventh straight game, 30-13 at Georgetown.
Coming off a 55-0 loss at Army in a game that had weather more appropriate for January 29th than October 29th, the Fordham Rams football team headed to our nation’s capital to battle the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday, November 5th.
The upstart Hoyas entered the game 7-2, and at 3-1 in the Patriot League, tied for the league lead with the 2-0 Lehigh Mountain Hawks. The team honored 21 seniors prior to the contest, and then went out and handed the Rams a 30-13 defeat, avenging a 24-19 loss at Jack Coffey Field last October 30th.
The Fordham Football team had to trudge through nearly a foot of snow on Saturday afternoon in order to exit Michie Stadium in West Point, NY, taking with them an eight-touchdown loss that served as a microcosm of the Rams injury-marred and inauspicious 2011 season.

Coming into Saturday’s match up with the Army Black Knights, Fordham fans had a lot to look forward to. The Rams had a chance to show that they could compete with an FBS (formerly Division 1) team. Fordham fans were excited to make the trip to Michie Stadium in West Point, New York.
Then the snowstorm hit.
Two-yards and a cloud of dust has become a dream scenario for the Fordham defense as they struggled once again to contain its opponent’s ground game, allowing 260 rushing yards as well as five touchdowns to Lafayette en route to the Rams fifth consecutive loss.
