In a game that was quite literally a must win for Fordham, the Rams emerged victorious in a closely contested match with La Salle 67-62.
With their Atlantic 10 tournament hopes hanging in the balance, the Fordham Rams were in desperate need of a victory Wednesday night at home against St. Bonaventure, a team that had defeated the men of Rose Hill by 44 earlier in the season. And while the margin of defeat did not match the severity of the contest back in January, Fordham decisively dropped another contest against the Bonnies 89-63 in the Rose Hill Gym.
A torrid first half effort was spoiled in a matter of seconds as the Rams woes continued against the second place Saint Louis Billikens. With just over a minute remaining before the break, Fordham trailed 20-16 on the strength of a staunch defensive effort that made up for a sputtering offense. A pair of threes off the bench from Billikens small forward Cody Ellis pushed the defecit to 10 points before the halftime buzzer, however, a defecit from which the Rams would never recover.
Despite an impressive second half comeback effort from the Rams that saw them narrow a 17 point halftime deficit to just one midway through the second stanza, Fordham dropped their 11th road game of the season on Wednesday night in Pittsburgh, falling 77-67 at the hands of the Duquesne Dukes.
The Rose Hill Gym has helped push Fordham over the hump in one heart-stopping game after the next this season. Of their eight home wins in 2011-2012, five have been by six points or fewer. The Dayton Flyers came into the Bronx this afternoon and reversed that theme with a 72-70 overtime victory to even their Atlantic 10 record at 5-5, Fordham drops to 2-8 in conference play.
The Charlotte 49ers topped the Fordham Rams at the Rose Hill Gym 69-62. Poor shooting became their downfall. The Rams shot 30.9% from the field and 23% from behind the three-point line.
The Rose Hill Gym on a Saturday afternoon is a special place. Natural light emanates over the court from the windows right above the south basket. The sleepiness of the weekend morning slowly dissipates as the energy of nearly 3,000 individuals fills the small, gothic building that more closely resembles a chapel than it does a gymnasium. But the quality that makes the Bronx matinee most special is a Fordham victory.
Fordham secured its second conference win with a 63-58 victory over the George Washington Colonials, making this the first season in which the team has won multiple Atlantic-10 games since 2007-08.
Coming off a 44-point loss to St. Bonaventure on Saturday, one could have easily predicted that Wednesday night’s game against Richmond could not possibly go any worse. That hypothetical prognosticator would prove at least partially correct, as the Rams fell by 44 once again, dropping a 102-58 decision to the Spiders in the Robins Center.
In a game the Rams would like to forget, Fordham was hammered by St. Bonaventure 95-51 at the Reilly Center in Olean, New York on Saturday. Playing without Chris Gaston, who was suspended for the game, Fordham looked every bit like a team playing without its best player. The offense never found a rhythm, and the depleted frontcourt was plagued by foul trouble, making it even more difficult to deal with All-Conference performer Andrew Nicholson.
