New York Yankees

1 on 1 With Harvey and Betances

by Amit Badlani, John DeMarzo

PIcked 7th overall in the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft, Matt Harvey had already arrived in the Major League Clubhouse for Mets Spring Training. The UNC alum is in position to speed through the minor leagues after spending time with the Mets Advanced A and AA squads last year.

Before his re-assignment to minor league camp, Harvey spent his time picking the brain of all the pitchers with MLB experience, especially Miguel Batista. Harvey warmed up with Batista every day and learned how to 'finish' on his pitches from him.

Times Are A-Changin'

Slowly but surely the Yankees dynasty years has become a thing of the past. Once upon a time the Yankees won 4 Championships in 5 years and appeared in 6 World Series in 8 years between 1996 and 2003. They were the most revered team in sports and had a knack for getting it done in October.  But the Yankees have only one World Series banner in the last 11 years and those dynasty years seem like a distant memory.

Time to Cut Back in the Bronx

by Chris Hilk

The joke around New York is that the baseball season ended last week, and it’s officially time for football. But these New Yorkers who refuse to look further west than the Meadowlands are missing quality postseason baseball played in the middle of the country by mid-market teams. The Brewers, Cardinals, Rangers and Tigers do not have the luxury of throwing money at any player who catches their eye; instead they pick and choose, often saying “no” to the prized free agents while building well-rounded teams that excel on the field. So now it’s time for the radical suggestion: maybe the Yankees should give this strategy a try.

More Games, More Decisions

by Chris Hilk

The Yankees are in the Playoffs for the 16th time in 17 years and even the most critical fans have to view this years’ regular season as a great success. There were only four days the entire season, and none since May 20th, the Pinstripes did not rank as one of the top two teams in the American League East; all four days they sat in 3rd place.

Moneyball Still Means Something

by Jake Kring-Schreifels

Late September in the baseball year is usually the time for post season surges, when teams jockey for position and aim to win the division or wildcard. That’s probably the reason that Moneyball, the book, now movie starring Brad Pitt about the 2002 Oakland Athletics, is out this Friday. That year, under famed GM Billy Beane, the A’s won 103 games, collecting a late season stash of victories (including a 20-game winning streak) en route to sealing the A.L. west division title. How they got there is more impressive.
