Angelique Kidjo with Rita Houston

Angélique Kidjo has lived her life building bridges as both an artist and a humanitarian. For her latest work, she reaches back to 1980 to cover the classic Talking Heads album Remain in Light.

It's such a natural choice since the Talking Heads were so influenced by West African rhythms and music during the recording of the album. Now it comes full circle as Kidjo brings the traditional music of Benin to this project, with backing vocals and some added lyrics in Yoruba. Interestingly, the album's subject matter still resonates today

In this Studio A session, you'll hear new versions of "Crosseyed and Painless," "Once in a Lifetime," and "The Overload," as well as my chat with Kidjo. It will all be part of tonight's edition of The Whole Wide World, which kicks off at 6 p.m., EDT, and it's also available on-demand below.

There are two chances for you to see Angélique Kidjo in the area too: in a performance at SummerStage Central Park on September 27, and in conversation at the Performing Arts Center at Purchase College on September 29.
