Citi Bike Expands in New York City

Citi Bike is expanding into more neighborhoods in New York City. Long Island City, Queens got its first Citi Bike station today.

Starting this week, a total of 12 City Bike stations will be installed in Long Island City. Polly Trottenberg, Department of Transportation Commissioner, said the neighborhood is ripe for the bike sharing program.

"Long Island City's a great place," Trottenberg said. "There's a lot of enthusiasm here for biking, a great bike network, a lot of new people moving into the neighborhood, buildings going up. It's got beautiful parks, and a lot of restaurants. It's a great destination."

But Trottenberg said Long Island City is just one part of the plan to expand City Bike into more areas.

"We're going to continue to expand in Queens, in Brooklyn, on the Upper West Side and the Upper East Side in Manhattan," she said. "And Mayor de Blasio has tasked me with eventually making Citi Bike a five borough program."

Trottenberg says the number of city bikes will grow from 6,000 to 12,000 over the next two years.
