Claire - CMJ Showcase - 2013

Not only was FUV Live at CMJ the very first CMJ show on Claire's itinerary, it was also the buzzy synthpop band's very first set — and radio performance — in the United States. Flying in from Munich, Germany the day before, the quintet surprised us by taking their lush dance EP, Broken Promise Land, and radically deconstructing it for the showcase — stripping away propulsive beats to find each song's tender, emotional core. On tracks like Claire's single "Games," the band members slowed the pace, stretched the song's boundaries, sweetly elevating the husky, intimate vocals of singer Josie-Claire Bürkle. It was a remarkable moment of a young band upending expectations of who they were — and what they could do — for a brand new audience.
