Clean Energy to Power Randall's Island

Hybrid project will use solar, wind, tidal.

Randall's Island will soon be home to a project showcasing clean energy innovation.

Plans to begin installation of New York City's first hybrid renewable energy plant are moving forward. The demonstration-scale project will use solar, wind, and tidal energy to power lights and facilities on Randall's Island.

The project is sponsored by the US Department of Energy, New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and Natural Currents Energy Services. Natural Current's president Roger Bason says the plant will serve as a learning opportunity, "The idea is to provide a microcosm of what our renewable future may look like, our sustainable future that enables solar, wind, and tidal."

The project comes on the heels of a recent announcement to transform the former Fresh Kills Land Fill on Staten Island into a solar and wind energy generation plant. The plant will also operate as an information center for additional education into renewable energy sources. The plant is expected to produce 200 kW—enough to power roughly 100 homes. It's expected to be completed by September.
