Jets Select Cornerback and Defensive Tackle in First Round

The New York Jets have selected Dee Milliner and Sheldon Richardson as the 9th and 13th picks in the NFL Draft respectively. The selections are defensive heavy to say the least. Dee Milliner is a cornerback who will be expected to fill the spot that has been left with the loss of Darrelle Revis. But General Manager John Idzick said the selection of Milliner was not made just to fill shoes.

“We said from the beginning our draft philosophy would be talent based, we are going to pick the best players for this team and that’s what we did,” Idzick said.

Sheldon Richardson is a defensive tackle who can also play the end, and he will be used to help clog the holes as the Jets were 20th in the NFL last season with their run defense.

Head coach Rex Ryan is excited about having a big body that he can move around the D-line.

“He can compete right away, when you say that we got two players in our top four that’ll tell you what the New York Jets think about [Sheldon]” Ryan said.

Milliner, from Alabama, will be expected to contribute immediately to this Jets defense that was 2nd in the league last season at stopping the pass. The cornerback has had injury concerns, including five surgeries already in his career.

But Idzick does not have any concern over the health of the Jets first overall pick.

“We are comfortable with the medical,” he said. “[Dee Milliner] is a very physical player.. he doesn’t miss time.”

Now everyone has to wonder what the Jets will do to fill their long list of offensive needs, as the team could use a good body on the line, a running back, and someone who can catch the football.

“This draft is deep,” Idzick said. “We feel confident that we have some very fine [offensive] players left in this draft, so we are excited about tomorrow and Saturday.”

No matter what, there was going to be questions about the picks in this draft. The Jets definitely have more holes to fill, but Idzick is happy with the selections so far and Rex Ryan is not stressing out about this year’s draft.

“You can’t blame this one on me,” Rex jokingly said following the Jets picks.

All jokes aside, he’s also confident about Milliner and Richardson.

“These two guys are going to make an impact for us and we love what they bring to the defense,” he said. “They certainly play like a Jet.”

It’ll be a few months before we see if these two guys live up to the hype, but for right now, it’s all smiles at Jets camp.
