A proposed centerpiece for a new public park was unveiled at the construction site for the renovated Hudson Yards. It's called Vessel, and developer Stephen Ross says he hopes it’ll have the same kind of draw as the Rockefeller Christmas tree.

“If you live in New York, or you come to New York, you have to go see the tree at Rockefeller Center. That’s just part of New York. And I wanted to create a 365-day Christmas tree,” says Ross.

But it looks nothing like a Christmas tree. The piece’s honeycomb design features more than 150 interconnected flights of stairs. And Ross says he hopes people will put them to use.

“We wanted to create something people could relate to, and be participatory, something that’ll be very exciting,” Ross adds.

Vessel will be open to the public in 2018.
