Disappearing Pothole Complaints

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer addresses the City's 311 complaint system.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer said more than 130 potholes remain unfilled because his online complaints to 311 went unanswered.

Staff members found that these complaints were disappearing. However, the open potholes throughout the city were not.

Stringer said 311 operators were unable to locate any record of his complaints, when confronted about the inaction.  “We have got to dig deeper about what’s happening” Stringer said.  He added it’s important that we don’t lose citizen’s specific complaints about real issues.

311 officials said the pothole complaints in question were filed with the Department of Transportation’s on-line reporting service, not their system.  They also said all of the potholes have since been repaired.
