Former Yonkers Jail House To Be Turned Into An Art House

The City of Yonkers attempts to revitalize their art scene

A former jail house in the City of Yonkers is getting a new lease in life.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano announced photography dealer Daniel Wolff bought the jail house and will turn it into a center for the arts. This is part of a bigger effort to revitalize and renovate the Yonkers downtown waterfront. Award winning architect and artist Maya Lin is expected to create a studio and exhibition space in the art house. Artist Vinnie Bagwell says that this contribution will help jump start the Yonkers art scene.

"People that normally do not come to Yonkers will come because they will be drawn by her name and her reputation. It will draw a whole new body of people potentially from around the world".

The 87-year-old jail house is currently two stories, but the long term plan is to add two additional floors to the building.
