Gracie Mansion Turns Seventy Five

Gracie Mansion has been the home to New York City mayors since 1942, which means this Sunday the building will celebrate its 75th birthday. To commemorate the event, the Gracie Mansion Conservancy is debuting "New York 1942," a new exhibition focused on the year former Mayor Fiorello La Guardia first moved into the residence.

The exhibit will feature works from prominent New York photographers such as Helen Levitt and John Albok. Other highlights include original recordings of jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia" and La Guardia's wartime addresses on WNYC.

Manhattan Borough Historian Sharon Wilkins says the mansion remains relevant in 2017. "[It] provides spaces and a places for people to learn, to share, to exchange ideas," says Wilkins.

Gracie Mansion is hosting a free open house this Sunday, from 10:00am to 2:00pm, for those who want to see "New York 1942."
