Mayor De Blasio Announces Installation of Security Cameras in New York City Public Housing

Mayor De Blasio says New York City's learned a painful lesson following the stabbing of two children at the Boulevard Houses in Brooklyn.

Installing cameras in New York City's public housing's not a new idea. The City Council's been trying to do it for years. Mayor De Blasio says it shouldn't have taken a tragedy to finally follow through with their plans.

"They went and made a priority, they secured the funding; that should have been the final word," he said. "They met with bureaucratic delays and rejection at every turn. That was unacceptable in the previous administration, that was unacceptable in my administration."

De Blasio says the Boulevard Houses are first on the list to get cameras in honor of 6 year-old PJ Avitto who was killed earlier this month. Crews have started installing 17 cameras throughout the housing project.

The mayor says 49 other developments will get cameras in the future. He says they'll fund the cameras with 27 million dollars previously allocated by the City Council.
