Michael Daves has been called "a titan of the Brooklyn bluegrass scene" by Chris Thile. His new album on Nonesuch, Orchids and Violence, is a unique double CD: one disc features performances in traditional bluegrass style and the other revisits those same songs in edgy rock arrangements.

That reflects Michael's musical duality: while he reveres bluegrass icons like Bill Monroe, he's also an adventurous sonic explorer.

Michael brought some of New York's best pickers, including Tony Trischka (who was Bela Fleck's teacher) on banjo and Brittany Haas (late of Crooked Still) on fiddle, to Studio A for this "Sunday Supper" session.
