Morning Brief: June 16

Albany lawmakers have failed to come to a decision on a law to create rent-controlled apartments in and around New York City. Now, the law has expired, and New Yorkers living in over a million such apartments are legally unprotected from landlords’ price hikes. Mayor de Blasio has already told tenants he won’t tolerate any landlord harassment while the law is out of commission. Governor Andrew Cuomo has also tried to assuage concerns, saying there will be “no short-term emergency” caused by the expiration.
