New Recycling Facility Opens in Westchester

Propane from unused barbecue tanks will heat Valhalla facility.

Westchester County residents now have a safe and convenient way to get rid of electronics, cleaning chemicals, expired medications, and other items.

County Executive Robert Astorino today opened the Household Materials Recovery Facility on the Grasslands Reservation in Valhalla. Astorino says the facility is the first of its kind in Westchester and part of a new environmental initiative.

"Electronic waste, hazardous materials, chemicals, it'll get them out of the waste stream and it'll make our rivers and everything else much safer."

Astorino says the facility will also be cost efficient. Propane from unused barbecue tanks will be used to heat the building and shredded documents will be sold to a recycling company.
