New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show 2018

The NYBG Holiday Train Show opens this weekend

The 27th annual train show at the New York Botanical Gardens will feature new models of Lower Manhattan in addition to its expansive New York City collection. Artists in Kentucky from Applied Imagination scoured forests for the plant materials that would eventually become replicas of places like Yankee Stadium and the Coney Island ferris wheel. This year, NYBG and Applied Imagination integrated boats into the exhibition. Manhattan and Bronx ferries sit in front of a towering model of the One World Trade Center.

Leslie Salka, director of Applied Imagination said in a statement, that they wanted to showcase Lower Manhattan in this years show because of the iconic architecture of the area. "[The Woolworth Building has] a lot of beautiful ornamentation and a realy lovely tower, so we hope that will be a nice juxtaposition to the sleek form of One World Trade Center. That's the beauty of Manhattan, the vast difference in architecutre and different styles that have come about. You always have to appreciate the new and the old. It all works and blends together, a lot like the melting pot of Manhattan.

The Holiday Train Show will not only celebrate the architecuture of the city, but visitors can partake in holiday programming as well. Bar Car Nights will be on select Fridys and Saturdays for adults 21 and over. Atendees can enjoy seasonal cocktails, and curated bites from the Bronx Night Market Holiday Pop-up. Roving a capella groups will offer the soundtrack to live ice-sculpting demonstrations.

There will also be a Family Film Series, and poetry readings featuring former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins, that celebrate the trains, holidays and the New York Botanical Garden.
