New York City Council Seeks to Help New Parents Return to Work

Council Members want to improve work-family balance

New York City Council members have joined with advocates and unemployed parents to call on the city to help parents get back into the workforce.

Councilman Ben Kallos has introduced the "Back to Work" bill. It would require city career centers, like Workforce1, to improve their services for parents seekng to find a job after having children.

Councilman Kallos said as women's history month wraps up, it is important to help all New Yorkers better balance work and family.

"The legislation will have a profound effect on women returning to work after caring for their families, simply because three times as many women than men quit their jobs to care for family," said Councilman Kallos.

"However, this will help any parent returning to work," he added.

Councilman Kallos said this bill is a part of a broader strategy in the city to help families. That strategy has included elements like the city's new universal Pre-Kindergarten program.
