New York City is considering a plan that would slap a fine on anyone tossing a Christmas tree with the decorations still attached.
Sanitation Department officials tell the New York Post (http://nyp.st/GGujF4 ) that too many people refuse to remove lights and other ornaments from trees before dumping them on the sidewalk for recycling.
Spokeswoman Kathy Dawkins said that increases the cost to mulch the trees, and ultimately adds to the department's disposal costs.
Violators would be fined $100 under the proposed rule.
It must still be approved by the Environmental Control Board. A public hearing is set for April 18.
