This week Mayor DeBlasio renamed a section of Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx "Hip Hop Boulevard."  Bronxites are thrilled the genre's roots are being recognized.

It was on Sedgwick Avenue in 1973 where a young DJ Kool Herc hosted a concert that gave listeners a preview into a new type of music, hip hop. More than 40 years later, the street in front of that building has been renamed "Hip Hop Boulevard."

Bronx City Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson says Kool Herc's street was an obvious choice for the honor.

“When you look at the evolution of Hip Hop, the fact that its transformed into this national network of music and culture,” Gibson said, “so many young musicians and entrepreneurs have really come out of the spirit of Hip hop, so we believe, in the Bronx, that it started right here on Sedgwick Avenue”

Gibson says there is a lot more hip hop in store for the Bronx, including plans for a hip hop history museum.
