NYPD Graduating Class Setting Diversity and Training Records

The NYPD Academy graduated 634 rookie cops on Friday, setting diversity records and recieving praise as the "best-trained" in New York history according to Mayor de Blasio.

The graduating class is made up of 53% officers of color and 32% of Latino descent, which is an NYPD all time high. "This extraordinary class represents everything that is good in New York City. You represent every neighborhood. You represent all the peoples that came together to make us great. . . You hail from 36 countries and you speak 22 languages. And I guarantee you will use all 22 languages in the work that you do," said the Mayor.

Not only is the class setting diversity records, but also Police Commissioner Bill Bratton says it is one of the best-trained in the history of the NYPD. He attributes that title to the special training they have recieved, such as a 15-day precinct immersion program; 4-day crises training for dealing with emotionally distrubed, homeless, and drug addicted individuals; and 6 months in the field with a supervising officer.

"We need you to be armed with all the skills neccessary to deal with the world of the 21st century," said Bratton.
