Maetzold Could Challenge Higgins and Murphy for Starting Job
What started as a two man showdown appears to have become a three-way race for the Fordham starting quarterback position. Part-time 2010 starter Ryan Higgins and Griffin Murphy, who missed all of last season due to injury, came into camp vying for the job but found company in the form of Freshman Peter Maetzold, a Houston area product out of Friendswood HS.
Head Coach Tom Masella said that Maetzold’s performance in the first few days of practice had made the situation more complicated. “Metz creeped in the mix. He had a good couple days and that’s complicated things” he said, throwing a wrench in what those within and outside the program figured would be a battle between the experienced Higgins and the raw but more versatile Murphy. Masella wouldn’t commit to a timeline for naming a starter ahead of the team’s September 1 opener at UConn.
Murphy had the most impressive performace of the candidates during the nearly two hour scrimmage, completing 7 of 10 passes and leading the only sustained touchdown drive of the evening on his fifth series leading the offense. Higgins threw the ball well downfield but placed a pair of deep passes just behind receivers and underthrew a man who had the defense beaten by a step.
The defense produced several impressive performers, most notably George Apostolopoulos and Ian Williams. Apostolopoulos was in the backfield all night, notching a pair of tackles for loss in addition to a sack. Williams, the speedy redshirt freshman out of West Palm Beach was all over the field. He blocked a pass at the line, was solid in coverage and made an impact on multiple special teams units. Masella was pleased with his performance, saying that the young corner had a bright future with the program.
One negative for the defensive unit was the loss of free safety Brendan Melanophy. The returning starter went down during a 7-on-7 drill during warm ups. He was in obvious pain with what Masella said was a knee injury. An update on his status is expected early this week.
