The Sound Of Queens, As Told By Borough Residents

Italian artist Marinella Senatore has created large-scale art performances around the globe. Now, she's bringing her art to the Queens Museumin her first American show. It's part of her ongoing series "La Piazza Universale/Social Stages."

Residents can be a part of the exhibit, too. Senatore is asking people who live in Queens to record sounds that they think represent their borough. That can include anything from spoken-word poetry to the sound of the 7 train. People can then submit their audio recordings to the Queens Museum's website. The deadline for submissions is March 17th.

Lindsey Berfond is the Assistant Curator for Public Programs at the Queens Museum. She says it is important to involve the community in the creation of art. Berfond says Senatore is "galvanizing on the interest and the participation of folks around [the borough]."

The sounds Senatore collects will be used as inspiration for an "Anthem for Queens," which will be composed by Emiliano Branda. The anthem will be played at the opening of the exhibit, on April 9th.
