Spring Break in NYC: Off-Season at Coney Island

Coney Island is quiet during the off-season.
Coney Island is famous for its summers of roller coasters, beaches, and hot dogs. But when the weather is still a little chilly and the rides are closed, Coney Island can provide a different experience.

On an off-season day like this, there's almost an apocalyptic feeling as the silent roller coasters tower overhead. The Aquarium and Nathan's are open, but Coney Island has little activity otherwise.

Catherine Guamen watches the changing crowds as she works in a candy shop on the boardwalk. She says the off-season has a certain charm all on its own,

"It's a nice experience, that's all, it's different. There's not a lot of people so you can actually, you know, have a quiet peaceful walk on the beach."

The crowds might be thin, but Coney Island is still impressive.

Juergen Schulze from Germany didn't mind the weather. He wanted to see how the famous Coney Island sized up to the place he saw in movies. He says,

"I'm surprised it's actually bigger than I thought before."

The peace won't last for long. Rides and attractions will re-open on March 29th.
