TriBeCa Crane Collapse

At approximately 8:25 this morning, a fatal crane collapse in Lower Manhattan resulted in one dead and three injured. According to Mayor de Blasio, construction workers were in the process of securing the crane against winds when the incident occurred. At 565 feet in length, it then plummeted to the ground on Worth Street, damaging rooftops and crushing cars in its wake.

De Blasio says he walked the length of the fallen crane to assess the damage."The fact is this is a very sad incident. We lost a life," he said, "But if you go out there on the street as I did and see what happened here, thank God it was not worse."

The base of the crane was located at the intersection at Worth Street and West Broadway. After the incident, four buildings sustained damage, including the New York Law School.

Catherine McVayHughes, chairperson for Community Board 1, meets with Mayor de Blasio today alongside other New York lawmakers to discuss steps forward following the collapse. She worries about the residents of her densly-packed district of Lower Manhattan: an area which has more than 90 construction sites with cranes.

"You can never be too cautious. But with things like this, it's always the taxpayers who have to pay for the damages."
