WFUV at SXSW: Sharon Van Etten Interview - "New York is where people kick your butt onto a path."

Rita Houston and the SXSW crew bumped into Sharon Van Etten at the Hotel San Jose on Thursday, unwinding after her big NPR Showcase at Stubb's on Wednesday  night.

They talk about the show ("It was really raw, really straightforward"), and what it's like to perform such emotionally intense songs in front of an audience ("everyone there was happy to be there, and we all felt it onstage").

The Jersey native and SXSW veteran says she had an interesting time choosing between living in Austin or New York (she picked Brooklyn): "I love Austin but... If you want to settle down, move to Austin. But if you want to get it DONE, go to New York first, and get your butt kicked. Do as much work as you can. When you're ready and your life is in order, then go settle down in Austin."
