In the spirit of music discovery which guides WFUV, our DJs offer their favorite new artists on the cusp of making it to the next level.

The jazzy, breezy pop of south London’s Izzy Bizu is buoyed by her remarkable vocals: raspy, acrobatic, and reminiscent of a more sanguine Amy Winehouse or Beth Gibbons of Portishead.

Bizu released her debut album, A Moment of Madness, in 2016 and its songs, like the irresistible “Naïve Soul” or “White Tiger,” are sweet confections of youthful yearning. Writing sophisticated songs that match her raw vocal talent is the challenge ahead, but Bizu has the promise … and the chops.

And she's well on her way — in mid-December, Bizu won BBC Introducing's Artist of the Year honors at the BBC Music Awards.
