While music and the arts are clearly in Deva Mahal's bloodline — her parents are the blues legend Taj Mahal and dancer and educator Inshirah Mahal— this singer and songwriter possesses her own style and voice. And what a voice it is. Mahal's songs are revelations and anthems, sung with unmatched emotion and reflecting her personal experiences. She releases her debut album, Run Deep, on March 23,

Although Team FUV was hoping to avoid actual reptiles in the courtyard at Hotel San José, we were more than happy to encounter Mahal's song "Snakes." Her performance featured several grackles instead as well as the familiar guitar chops of Binky Griptite, host of The Boogie Down on WFUV.
