You might know the J.R.R. Tolkien line, "Not all who wander are lost." For Rayland Baxter, his wanderings have been crucial to feeding and finding his creative muse.

The Nashville native’s time spent in Colorado, Israel, South America and his hometown has played a role in his development as an artist for nearly a decade. For his third album, Wide Awake, he didn’t have to wander far — only to Kentucky — to spend time intensively woodshedding, and the result is a fantastic new collection of songs.

Baxter and his band did a great set for us at Rockwood Music Hall, and he told us a bit about the album. Baxter also proved, both in conversation and via his songs, that he has a natural gift for storytelling.
