Westchester County Bans Conversion Therapy

Gay conversion therapy is now illegal in Westchester Country.

Country Executive George Latimer, who advocated for the measure, signed the bill into law Thursday.

The law bans therapies for minors aimed at changing ones sexual orientation or gender identity.

"Conversion therapy has been condemned by the American Psychiatric Association and many other similar mental health organizations" said Latimer.

The American Psyciatric Association clams conversion therapies are based on views about homosexuality rejected by all major mental health professionals.

Nine states and the District of Columbia have enacted similar laws. A bill banning the practice statewide has passed in the New York State Assembly for many years, but stalled in the New York State Senate.
